Do you live smack-dab in the middle of an influenza Hot Spot, without even knowing it?
Besides noticing how many of your co-workers called in sick, you can now add the CDC’s “FluView” website to your “Favorites”. This interactive map, updated weekly, uses a color-coded system to highlight the states with the most outpatient visits to healthcare providers by patients with “influenza-like illnesses” (ILI). These ILI visits are reported on a weekly basis. You can compare this year’s activity to every season since 2008, for comparison.
Individual states, such as New York for instance, have their own ILI websites as well, if you would like to drill down to a more local level. New York’s report also includes a county map showing ILI activity.
Every Flu season is different, with spikes and peaks occurring at different times. Tools such as CDC’s FluView, or your own state’s map of current and historical influenza epidemics will tell you if the height of the flu season is in your rear-view mirror…or on the horizon.
